Adapted from Yiannis Ritsos’ famed poem in The Fourth Dimension, the play offers a haunting, alternative perspective on the tragic myth of the Labdacid dynasty (the House of Oedipus).
Unlike her heroic and unyielding sister Antigone, who chose martyrdom and death, Ismene chose life. Now elderly, living amidst the lingering shadows and ruined splendor of her family’s royal palace, she speaks to a young, silent officer. In her intense poetic monologue, Ismene reflects on her youth, her suppressed desires, the devastating tragedy of her family, and the price of standing in the shadow of absolute ideals. She defends the beauty of mundane human existence, sensual pleasure, and survival over blind fanaticism and destructive glory.
