1st BE-HIVE THEATRE FESTIVAL 2023

Medea Pictures and DROMOS Theatre present the 1st BE-HIVE THEATRE FESTIVAL 2023 from September 15th to October 1st. As a first step in this initial edition, we will attempt to view theatre genuinely; we will dare to rewrite the rules and experiment with new forms and communication codes. For DROMOS Theatre and the MEDEA Theatre Group, the adhesive element of a Hive (Kypseli) is art. The permanent refrain of the human condition, the clearest reflection of our nature, our comfort and inspiration, our passion, purpose, and refuge. Through this festival, we aspire to find the path to our shared home together, to restore our common orientation, and to collectively trace our route. And even if we fail to find the way, at least we will have lost ourselves together. And right there, we can build our new HIVE.

Besides its competition section, the 1st BE-HIVE THEATRE FESTIVAL 2023 will showcase theatrical proposals that stood out outside the main competition, as well as lectures, workshops, and music.

On September 15, 2023, we open our doors to the public and to all professional actors, dancers, directors, and artists to attend the festival’s proposals, becoming active participants in a fertile, creative dialogue on new challenges, new thematic concepts, and open forms.

We aimed to build an alternative program from the proposals submitted to compete. Just as we remained open to every scenic form of expression, the program was shaped around our original premise. It was formed like a HIVE containing drama and comedy, monologue and experimentation, dance theatre and music.

The ultimate goal of DROMOS Theatre’s BE-HIVE THEATRE FESTIVAL is to establish itself as an institution, repeating annually, continuously improving, and gradually expanding to host guest artists from both within and beyond national borders—serving as a venue, place, and means of gathering, interacting, and coexisting. For a NEW Kypseli (Hive).

NOTE FROM THE FESTIVAL’S ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

What can a Theatre offer when the World is falling apart? What is the point of a “good” play when everything around you seems chaotic and uncertain? What can you discover in a Festival that the countless stages of Athens don’t already offer? What can a director tell you about your life and concerns that is better than the advice of your “favorite” Youtubers, Twitchers, or TikTokers?

Perhaps you can find the culture and the humanity you lost inside yourself—building an integrated HIVE for its evolution, for overthrowing the norm, for free expression, and for a fresh perspective that might just lay the right foundations for a better society and a better world.

Let us all meet at the 1st Be-Hive Theatre Festival 2023, where together we might succeed in becoming the bees of an optimistic tomorrow.
