“Ancient Drama in the Modern City” is a new podcast series produced by Medea Pictures and Dromos Theatre, written and directed by Emmanouil Mavros. The project aims to bridge the gap between ancient Greek tragedy and contemporary reality, moving away from viewing these works as mere museum exhibits. Instead, the series treats the plays of Sophocles, Euripides, and Aeschylus as essential tools for analyzing modern dilemmas, including political scandals, migration, social marginalization, and the abuse of power.
Each episode features dramaturgical analysis and theatrical readings by the MEDEA Theatre Group, exploring how the anxieties of 5th-century BC Athens mirror the challenges of today’s society. The first season covers six major tragedies, examining themes such as civil disobedience (Antigone), the struggle of the “foreigner” (Medea), mass hysteria and fanaticism (The Bacchae), political corruption (Oedipus Rex), the refugee crisis (The Suppliants), and the evolution of justice (The Oresteia). The series is set to launch on October 2, 2026, and will be available on Spotify.
