Shakespeare in the Metro takes the classics down off the library shelf, boards them onto the city’s trains, and asks one question: how far are Shakespeare’s cities from our own digital everyday life? Each episode is a solo audio essay woven with atmospheric sound design and live theatrical readings, pairing a Shakespearean tragedy with a defining tension of contemporary urban life.
Season 1 runs for six episodes. Coriolanus faces the social-media mob and the mechanics of cancel culture; Hamlet becomes the portrait of urban depression and existential paralysis; Macbeth turns into a study of ruthless corporate ambition; Richard III plays the first spin doctor in an age of fake news; King Lear speaks to the isolation of old age; and Romeo and Juliet is reframed as a political tragedy of a polarised, divided society. The thread that runs through all six is a single, unsettling discovery — how little the human being has really changed. Only the set has moved: from the palace to the metro carriage, from the pulpit to the timeline.
The result is a series that treats four-hundred-year-old texts as if they were written this morning — accessible, cinematic and sharply contemporary, without losing the weight of the original drama.
