Plot & Concept Summary
Set in the royal court of Egypt, the story follows Panaretos, a brave but low-born orphan raised by King Filogonos, and Erophile, the King’s daughter. Having grown up together, Panaretos and Erophile fall deeply in love and secretly marry, bound by true affection rather than political status.
When King Filogonos decides to arrange a royal marriage for his daughter with a foreign prince to expand his political power, he discovers the secret union between Erophile and Panaretos. Blinded by rage, pride, and a sense of betrayal, the King executes Panaretos, tearing his heart and head from his body, and presents these gruesome remains to Erophile inside a golden basin as a tragic wedding “gift.” Devastated by the horror, Erophile commits suicide over her lover’s remains. Driven by revenge and outrage at the King’s cruelty, the women of the court rise up and kill King Filogonos, bringing the tragedy to its bloody conclusion.
