The Play

In a Malta besieged by time, war, and corruption, power is no longer exercised in the name of ideals, but in the name of debt, profit, and blood. When the Christian Governor arbitrarily decides to confiscate the property of all the island’s Jews to pay tribute to the Turks, the immensely wealthy merchant Barabas loses everything “for the common good.”

Stripped of the protection of the law, Barabas refuses to become a victim of history. He turns his loss into a deadly weapon of revenge and, using his own daughter Abigail as bait, begins pulling the strings of an invisible slaughter. Through shadows, a constant threat is imposed, unfolding a nightmarish web of political deceit, religious hypocrisy, and betrayal, where no one is innocent.

Christopher Marlowe’s classic, heretical masterpiece (1589–1592) is brought to the present day through a harsh, post-modern adaptation guided by the “ghost” of Machiavelli. The play strips bare the mechanisms of modern power, reminding us that the most horrific crimes are not committed in the dark, but signed nonchalantly at official tables.

In the end, when the curtain falls and the dust settles, the question returns to us: Which hand created the beast we fear?
